Overview

At the take-off of the College of Science and Technology on the 21st of October 2002, all the academic programmes were grouped into two Departments, namely:

  1. Department of Computer and Information Technology
  2. Department of Environmental Sciences

The Department of Computer and Information Technology started with the following Degree Programmes:

  • B.Sc Computer Science (4 years)
  • B.Sc Management & Information System (4 years)
  • B.Eng Computer Engineering (5 years)
  • B.Tech Information Technology (5 years)

The 5-year Degree Programme in Electrical and Electronics Engineering was introduced in the 2003/2004 academic session. At the beginning of the 2004/2005 academic session, more engineering programmes were introduced. These additions necessitated the re–grouping of the Programmes. This re-grouping gave birth to the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering.

The Department of Electrical and Information Engineering offers three Degree Programmes, namely:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) in Computer Engineering
  • Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) in Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) in Information and Communication Engineering

The duration of each of the Degree Programmes in the Department is five (5) years or ten (10) semesters. Nine (9) semesters of coursework and laboratory practicals are spent in the University. The long vacation of eight (8) weeks between the 200 level and 300 levels is devoted to Students’ Work Experience Programme (SWEP) in the different works and production centres of the University (e.g., Wood mill, batching plant, metal fabrication workshop, bakery, Hebron Water, Dominion Press, CLMT, construction sites, etc.). At the 400 level, students embark on Students Industrial Experience Scheme (SIWES) which involves six months of industrial training, starting immediately after the Alpha Semester. As a result, the first three years, that is 100, 200, 300 levels, are 100% common to the three Programmes.

Vision

The vision of the Information and Communication Engineering programme is to produce a new generation of graduates equipped with adequate understanding of the basic concepts of Information and Communication Engineering, complemented with the required skills for proffering solutions to national and international societal challenges.

Mission

The mission of the Information and Communication Engineering programme is to create universally-applicable and technologically-relevant knowledge in the field, with the aim of promoting an integrated and universal education with real-life, real-time application vis-à-vis Science, Information and Communication, Engineering, Technology and Human Capacity Building.

Philosophy

The philosophy of the Information and Communication Engineering programme in Covenant University is designed to produce a new generation of youths who have a sound knowledge of the fundamentals in electrical or computer engineering that allows them to analyse and solve technical problems, to apply hardware and software tools to problem solution, and to create and evaluate technical products. Information and Communication Engineering, as the backbone of a knowledge economy, is highly dynamic and versatile. Therefore, the programme seeks to contribute effectively and sufficiently to the knowledge economy by putting in place the curricula that meet these challenges. The training is to produce graduates, who are producers rather than mere consumers of knowledge economy, by being, upon graduation, ready-made functional engineers in industries, research assistants, scholars in academia, or successful entrepreneurs in the Information and Communication Engineering sector. The training also creates the awareness and understanding of the moral, ethical, legal, and professional obligations needed to function as a computer engineer while protecting public health and welfare and the environment in a global society.

Objectives

The goal of the programme is the development of Information and Communication Engineers capable of developing software and hardware aspects of the computer-based systems and advancing the practice of Information and Communication Engineering Technology and Practice. The software aspect includes high-level languages and complex programs, which are often required to solve problems while the hardware aspect involves the design and implementation of cyber-physical systems (comprising of complex circuits and electronics) that are useful for solving technical problems in our society. In order to actualize the philosophy and goal of the programme, the specific objectives of the programme are to:

  1. facilitate a good grasp by students of a broad spectrum of basic Information and Communication engineering principles.
  2. develop related computing systems needed to solve engineering problems using relevant knowledge gained in subjects such as Mathematics, Computer Programming, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Networking, Computer Architecture and Electronic Circuit Design.
  3. facilitate the acquisition of practical work experience in development of hardware and software-based systems.
  4. inculcate entrepreneurial, marketing, and management skills in students.
  5. enable students to engage extensively in Information and Communication Engineering research and development; and
  6. exercise original thought, have good professional judgement and be able to take responsibility for the execution of important tasks as well as adapt and adopt exogenous technology in order to solve local engineering problems.
